What is a stent and when is it used?
If you are a candidate for angioplasty, your doctor inserts a balloon into your blocked artery and inflates it. This opens up the artery and improves blood flow to the heart. When your blockage is greater than 70 percent, your doctor will typically insert a stent. This device holds open the newly inflated artery and helps reduce the possibility of a recurrence of blockage.
