Are you employed and your employer requires you to drive a company vehicle?

Then you may need to apply for an “ignition interlock employer exclusion.”

If an individual is required to install an ignition interlock on their personal vehicle, they may not drive another vehicle that does not have an ignition interlock installed. This may pose a problem if the driver is employed and required to drive a work vehicle during business hours. There is a solution, it is called the “Ignition Interlock Employer Exclusion.”

What is Required to Participate

There is a way around this problem. A driver must apply for an ignition interlock employer exclusion. To do this, a driver must obtain the following information from their employer.

The information must be on the employer’s letterhead stationery and must include the following information

  1. The employer must verify the employees full name, date of birth and driver’s license number.
  2. The employer must verifying that the employee is employed with the employer’s company.
  3. The employer must verify that he/she will not allow an ignition interlock devices to be installed in the employer’s vehicle.
  4. The employer must provide the title number, tag number and VIN number of vehicles that employee will be driving during the course of his or her employment. If the vehicle Fleet is too large to list each vehicle, the employer must provide the motor vehicle administration MVA with employers Maryland soundex number or “Z” number.
  5. The employer must inform the MVA of the employee’s usual work hours.
  6. The employer must verify that the employee will not use a company vehicle to commute between the employee’s home and the employer’s business. If the employee uses a company vehicle to commute between home and work, the vehicle must have ignition interlock installed.

Once all of this information is collected and enclosed on an employer’s letterhead stationery, it must be mailed to the following address:
